Lord Byron's 'Scrapbook' of Celebrities | HENI Talks and The National Portrait Gallery
HENI Talks in collaboration with @nationalportraitgallery reflect on the invention of the cult of personality in the Romantic age through Byron’s Decoupage Screen.
As a piece of furniture with a practical function, like a giant scrapbook, this six-foot high, four-panelled folding screen is elaborately decorated on each side with a cut and pasted mosaic of text and images.
One side of the screen depicts a history of the English theatre in over one hundred and fifty mezzotints and line engravings of notable actors. The other side presents the world of boxing.

Classic example of Eurocentric colonial Orientalism….. it is well worth reading the great Edward Said’s materpiece “Orientalism” for a deeper understanding of the complexities of this singular portrait by Sir Joshua……. Worth another lecture better intellectually informed. This portrait remains dearest to me at The National, on every visit. Over the years, thank you for your channel. Said with absolute confidence, as if it were a fact. It seems that the whole gamut of British art and social history has to be reduced and rewritten to reflect her narrow identitarian viewpoint.

"Being able to create a portrait in the grand manner of a dignified man, a beautiful man, was something he wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to do with a british aristocrat" How does she stay so level and calm while delivering that kind of a burn? Damn.

They're called miniatures because they are painted on vellum on playing cards. I think our presenter or editor is assuming too much knowledge and misleading us since none of those words tell us why miniatures are called miniatures if not because small. Miniature comes from Italian _miniatura_ "illustration in manuscript" which were generally small because books were small compared to most painting canvases. That word itself coming from Latin _minium_ "red lead" used as a colorant in ink. That they are small and being similar to various mini- words that do mean small has lead miniature to become "small" in English.

So happy to see this comment. How can they say this is the "one of the first" documentaries exploring the subject in-depth when they're years late and so surface-level? On the positive side, I really wonder if either Folding Ideas or munecat have seen this and will do some sort of rebuttal/breakdown.

It’s a lot of madness and idiocy, centered around one holy concept: money. I’ve seen little to no art here, nor have I seen any thorough criticism. This is not a documentary but a self-congratulatory display of greed and little substance.

This was really insightful, thought provoking and perfectly executed. I've been doing research for the potential of NFTs on music, and I was a bit concerned because after the boom of media attention around 2022, there have been precious few articles/resources. I was wondering what's going on, and does this still have potential? I wouldn't say I"m any closer to knowing?! But I know for sure the underlying tech isn't going away; I just hope there really is enough demand, not for musicians to get rich but merely to connect with their fans in more ways, place more value back on the music/track itself, and monetize more directly.

The reality of Charles I's dictatorial rule skirted over for a somewhat reverential depiction of the monarch that was light on detail on the actual subject notwithstanding any real detail regarding the provenance of the statue. Could have done with more detail about the deification of Charles I and the cult that built up around the dead King that surely contributed to the Statue's survival. Also could have linked the work to the current Royal family and the reasons why it is still there, and the reasons why the plinth has not been restored in recent years.
